Tarantula Handling - read below before purchasing

Tickets must be purchased ahead of time. Due to limited space, each person attending must purchase a ticket, even if they do not want to touch the tarantula. Anyone under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Please try to arrive on time, the session starts at 10 min after the hour to accommodate people running late. When the session starts, the door will be locked and no refunds will be given for late arrivals. These rules are for the safety and comfort of our tarantula. If you arrive more than 15 min early, you will be charged regular zoo admission in addition to the tarantula handling ticket. We do one to two tarantula handling sessions per month. If you’ve already handled a tarantula and other bugs but want something more advanced, we are offering an arachnid handling session! We generally do this once per month. We will have a tarantula, scorpion, vinegaroon, and other spiders available for handling. Not for young children. Some bug handling experience recommended! While none of these arachnids are medically significant, they can bite and sting. The ones we are handling have been tested many times by our staff and none of them have done so, but that does not mean there is no risk. There will be a waiver to sign before the session. Learn the techniques of relaxing, pinning, and drying dead insect specimens. In this class you will not know what kind of bug you are pinning until you arrive. Ticket includes instruction, zoo admission, pins, forceps, styrofoam pinning block, and one dead insect. Optional shadowbox add-on. Due to limited space, everyone attending must purchase a ticket. Recommended age 10+ as pinning requires fine motor skills and uses sharp objects. Kids under age 15 must have an adult present with a ticket. Includes instruction and two bug-catching vials. If you purchase the bug catching kit you get two bug-catching vials, a drawstring bag, magnifying glass, forceps, a butterfly net, and a field notebook. Macro Photography Workshop

Join our macro photography workshop with co-host Gina and learn the art of photographing tiny specimens! We will cover camera settings, lighting, composition, focus stacking, and insect identification tips. Bring your digital camera and any lenses or gear you have. While we will have two cameras you can use, we recommend getting your own before taking a macro photography class. We can also show you some tips and tricks for phone camera photography. Live and pinned specimens will be available to shoot. No prior experience needed. Recommended age is 15+, younger photographers are welcome but they must be accompanied by an adult with a ticket. Due to limited space, each person attending must purchase a ticket. If you are accompanying someone and do not want to participate, please purchase the $10 parent/guest ticket. |

Come hang out at Star Bar and draw some bugs! No tickets required, pay at the door and come and go as you please. Seating is limited, so get there early to claim your spot! We will have a variety of live insects and arachnids on display in terrariums and pinned/preserved displays to use as drawing reference and inspiration. Get some dreamy portraits taken with live (or preserved) bugs! The owner of the insectarium, Jessica, is also a photographer and has done many live bug photoshoots on their own time with friends and colleagues. Now the insectarium is offering you the opportunity to get glamorous in the most unique way! We have mantises, a tarantula, a scorpion, millipedes, and roaches available for shooting. If you aren't quite ready for live animals, we do have pinned specimens available to shoot with, as well. We will have Kymil from Planet Loveship on hand to provide wardrobe and accessories, simple hair and make-up, and a sprinkle of hype and encouragement before you get in front of the camera. $100 gets you 30 minutes of prep time, 30 minutes of shoot time, 5 edited digital photos, and a fun time hanging at the insectarium. For an extra $50 you can add one additional model to the shoot. If you would like someone to accompany you to the shoot but they are not participating, please purchase the guest ticket. All ages but kids under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult and kids under 18 must have an adult sign the waiver either on the day of the event or beforehand.
