11am-12:30pm Isopods make fascinating pets, on their own, or as a cleanup crew for terrariums. In this 1 hour, all-ages workshop, you will learn about these adorable arthropods, set up a terrarium, and leave with some isopods of your own! These are exotic isopods and cannot be released into the wild. Due to limited space, everyone attending must purchase a ticket. If you are accompanying someone and do not want to make a terrarium, please purchase the $12 parent/guest ticket. Kids under age 16 must have an adult present and directly supervising. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time.
Due to limited space, each person attending must purchase a ticket, even if they do not want to touch the tarantula. Please try to arrive on time, the session starts at 10 min after the hour to accommodate people running late. When the session starts, the door will be locked and no refunds will be given for late arrivals. These rules are for the safety and comfort of our tarantula. If you arrive more than 15 min early, you will be charged regular zoo admission in addition to the tarantula handling ticket. Arachnid Handling
If you’ve already handled a tarantula and other bugs but want something more advanced, we are offering an arachnid handling session!
We will have a tarantula, scorpion, vinegaroon, and other spiders available for handling. Not for young children. Some bug handling experience recommended! While none of these arachnids are medically significant, they can bite and sting. The ones we are handling have been tested many times by our staff and none of them have done so, but that does not mean there is no risk. There will be a waiver to sign before the session. Friday, 13 Sept 11am-12pm
$70 discounted to $50! Learn the techniques of relaxing, pinning, and drying dead insect specimens. Ticket includes zoo admission, pins, forceps, styrofoam pinning block, and a dead butterfly. Choose between a rice paper butterfly or an Indonesian swallowtail. There is an optional shadowbox add on. Recommended age 10+ as pinning requires fine motor skills and uses sharp objects. Kids under age 16 must have an adult present with a ticket. Please purchase a $10 guest/parent ticket if you are attending but do not want to pin a bug. |
Ghost mantis terrarium workshop
29 Sept 5-6pm
Build a custom habitat for your new pet ghost mantis! In this workshop you will learn how to take care of a mantis and leave with everything you need to give your mantis a good life. Ticket includes: zoo admission, one ghost mantis nymph, plastic terrarium, substrate, spray bottle, decor, fruit fly culture, and a care sheet. Kids under age 16 must have an adult present with a ticket. Anyone attending who does not want to build a terrarium must still purchase a $12 guest ticket. Peninsula Park Meet at gazebo Take a walk with us! We will show you different techniques for finding, catching, and identifying our local insects, arachnids, and other friends. $10 adults $8 kids, students, seniors, SNAP recipients 15% member discount Ticket includes two bug catching vials. For an additional $15 you can purchase a bug catching kit! Kit includes a drawstring bag, butterfly net, bug vials, magnifying glass, forceps, and a field notebook.
